The Physical Exam
During this exam, the body is examined visually, auditorily, and tactilely, to determine if there is anything that warrants further investigation. The following physical attributes are examined.
- Eyes
- Examine the sclera, conjunctiva, eyelids, and iris.
- Note overall appearance

- Ears
- Examine the texture and color.
- Note any discharge, odor or sensitivity
- Examine the texture and color.
- Gums & Teeth
- Examine gum color and capillary refill time
- Examine condition of teeth
- Note any plaque, tartar or periodontal disease.

- Lymph Nodes
- Check mandibular, scapular, and popliteal lymph nodes for size
- Check neck for abnormalities

- Skin
- Check hair coat for normal texture and appearance.
- Check for parasites
- Check for lumps and bumps
- Check hair coat for normal texture and appearance.
- Abdomen
- Palpate for liver of spleen enlargement
- Check for possible bladder stones
- Check for any possible masses
- Palpate for liver of spleen enlargement
- Heart & Lungs
- Check for heart murmurs or abnormal heart rate
- Check lungs for abnormal sounds
- Check for heart murmurs or abnormal heart rate
