The Physical Exam

During this exam, the body is examined visually, auditorily, and tactilely, to determine if there is anything that warrants further investigation. The following physical attributes are examined.
  • Eyes
    • Examine the sclera, conjunctiva, eyelids, and iris.
    • Note overall appearance
  • Ears
    • Examine the texture and color.
    • Note any discharge, odor or sensitivity
  • Gums & Teeth
    • Examine gum color and capillary refill time
    • Examine condition of teeth
    • Note any plaque, tartar or periodontal disease.
  • Lymph Nodes
    • Check mandibular, scapular, and popliteal lymph nodes for size
    • Check neck for abnormalities
  • Skin
    • Check hair coat for normal texture and appearance.
    • Check for parasites
    • Check for lumps and bumps
  • Abdomen
    • Palpate for liver of spleen enlargement
    • Check for possible bladder stones
    • Check for any possible masses
  • Heart & Lungs
    • Check for heart murmurs or abnormal heart rate
    • Check lungs for abnormal sounds
