Less Common Vaccines

There are many other vaccines that are less commonly known and used.  Some vaccines are important in certain specific cases.  There are some that are controversial.  There are even some vaccines that were important in the past but are no longer needed.
Dog
  • Canine Influenza
    • Controversial
    • Two "strain" specific vaccines
    • Does not prevent the disease, but does decrease the duration of symptoms
    • Mild respiratory disease with very low mortality
    • Required by some boarding kennels
  • Corona Virus
    • Not needed
    • Mild uncommon disease
    • Only affects puppies
  • Lepto 2
    • For canine specific lepto which is still very low. 
    • Use Lepto 4 if needed
  • Lyme
    • Specific situation
    • Disease is geographically dependent. 
    • Not a problem in Missouri
    • Best control of the disease is achieved with acaricides like Nexgard.
Cat
  • Chlamidia
    • Controversial
    • Sporatic disease
    • Mainly kittens
    • Animal shelter issue
  • Giardia
    • Specific situation
    • Vaccine not very effective
    • Giardia best controlled by improving  cleanliness
  • FIV
    • Controversial
    • Effectiveness issues
    • Mainly a problem in animal shelters and catteries
    • Neutering may be a more effective prevention for most cats
  • Corona (FIP)
    • Controversial
    • Disease caused by an abnormal immune response
    • Not a contagious disease per se.
  • Bordetella
    • Not needed for normal pet cats
    • May be useful in large "pet mill" type catteries.
